Heat pipes, which are often regarded as “super thermal conductors”, have been widely applied to many areas for more than 50 years. Currently, due to various requirements on thermal management and cooling systems, such as lightweight, better heat transfer performance, optimised appearance, etc., heat pipes have been improved and developed rapidly over the past decades. In this short course, we will first introduce the working principle and heat transfer theory of heat pipes, then discuss the general methodology and procedures of heat pipe design and manufacture typically for those used for electronic cooling and equipment thermal management. Recent developments of heat pipes and the potential for various novel applications of thermal managements, electricity-thermal co-generations, etc. will also be introduced and discussed.
